Sorry Credo Action, I like the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2015!

As a member of Credo Action's mailing list I like most of their causes. Unfortunately they are in the woo fueled anti-GMO camp and have promoted a number of causes in that vein.

So to counteract their campaign against H.R.1599 - Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2015 (They refer to it as the Monsanto Protection Act 2.0), I am here to urge you to support it.

Here is Credo's list of "bad things" about the bill, I think they are all very good things:
  • Block all state laws requiring mandatory GMO labeling, including Vermont’s landmark labeling law;
  • Prevent the FDA from establishing a national mandatory GMO labeling program;
  • Block all non-GMO claims until the USDA creates a non-GMO certification program, which could take up to 10 years;
  • Block all state and local efforts to protect rural communities and farmers from the impacts of GMO crops;
  • Prevent claims by food companies that non-GMO foods are better than GMO ones.
Laws and regulations about the safety of food should be based on scientifically testing the food in question. Not on unsubstantiated fear mongering about a set of tools used to produce the food.

As a species we have been "engineering" our food for 200,000 years. In fact there is evidence that Homo neanderthalensis and Homo erectus did as well.
